No, I didn't get shot.

Unrelatedly, my attitude toward Livejournal has softened a little. The advertisements still annoy me tremendously, and I plan to keep all my useful writing on the Dreamwidth account. However, I won't delete the LJ posts, and I will post mundane updates giving the details of my life on both journals, when I resume writing them. I think I'm some, uh, thirty-something months late on those.

Edit, April 2012: I'm back to being pissed off at the site. I hope you die, Livejournal.

Wow, that's terrible. At least nobody else was hurt by the guy.

I still use LJ to read a few comms and friends who haven't switched, but I'm happier when I don't have to. It's not horrible but it is an annoyance, like you said.

I still won't get a Facebook, though. =p

May I suggest Adblock Plus? I use it and I don't get ads.

If you don't use Firefox, it won't be of much use, though...

I'm trying it out, but my concern is that there are still some sites which I want to generate ad revenue from my viewing. Do you know if there's an ad blocker (or an option in Adblock Plus) that will still load ads, but not display them? A cursory search didn't turn up anything helpful.

You can white-list sites so that ads still show up using Adblock Plus. However, you can't "load but don't show". The author says that if ad sites observe that their ads are often loaded but nobody actually clicks on them, they'll consider an impression worth much less, and thus trying to trick them that way won't work.

I think you could get the effect by using other addons to hide the ads with CSS, but I'm not sure which ones do that. Blocking ads on the pages you do visit and white-listing them on those you want to support seems to be a reasonable solution. If you want to attempt hiding-but-loading, Element Hide Helper might be useful.
