I too went through a similar experience when i gave up on philosophy. I, like you, came to understand it better when i wasn't thinking about it constantly. There is allot of creativity in the 'what if' phase of philosophy, perhaps what had happened to me and/or you is what happens to all artists when they take a break.
I left the normative philosophy from my upbringing to more of a positive philosophy based on my reactions and consequences to actions. I have found lately that I have reverted back to a normative philosophy defined by me as a guide for me specifically. So yeah, i kinda see that 'journey' in your post.
